Minor in Public Service
The minor is designed to introduce students to the concept of public service and the complex relations that exist among government, nonprofit and business sectors, as well as social movements, in advancing what is loosely defined as the public good. Students who take these classes will be well prepared for public service internships, volunteer work, and careers that take into account social well-being.
The capstone course of the public service minor requires students to identify a social, economic, or political problem, develop a causal analysis, and propose a public service action plan to meliorate the condition. Students will have an opportunity to delve more deeply into the problem through the lenses of policy, politics, social action, law/or and governance. The outcome will be a portfolio demonstrating how public service can bring about change.
Upon completion of the liberal arts minor in public service, students will be able to:
- Explain the concept of public service as it relates to notions of collective and individual well–being;
- Differentiate between the roles played by the government, nonprofit, and business sectors, and advocacy groups in identifying and advancing the public good;
- Identify how public service can result in inequitable outcomes, and strategies to avoid such outcomes; and
- Articulate, compare, and evaluate strategic actions that may be used to address a societal problem and improve our community, nation, and global society.
To declare the minor, students need to file the Minor Declaration Form with the Registrar’s Office.
