    Often it’s the time spent outside of the classroom that can add the most value to your university experience. That’s why the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs offers numerous opportunities to gain work experience and network with classmates here in New York City and beyond. Explore these and many other ways to complement your education.

    Clubs and Organizations

    The college experience shouldn’t be limited to classes and homework; join one of the Marxe School’s many student organizations and learn how to network, build leadership skills, and form relationships that can last a lifetime.

    Each of our student clubs has its own Facebook page. We encourage you to “like” the page, and use it to sign up, engage, and maintain connections with other members.

    The MPA club is committed to cultivating a vibrant community that amplifies student voices while actively contributing to the public interest and influencing policy decisions that impact our academic, professional, and personal lives.

    Our vision is to cultivate a dynamic community of aspiring public service professionals committed to making a meaningful impact in our fields. We aim to be a catalyst for personal and professional growth by fostering an environment that encourages collaboration, innovation, and practical engagement.

    The MIA Club is committed to creating educational and networking opportunities for graduate students at Baruch College interested in international affairs and future MIA alumni.

    The HEA Club of Baruch College promotes community building among Baruch and other students, alumni, and higher education professionals. The club meets and hosts events to provide opportunities for networking, and educational and professional development.

    Baruch Grad Pride Society promotes the representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex and Straight-allied graduate students in and around Baruch College, and raises awareness about issues affecting the community through professional development, civic engagement, and advocacy programming.

    Pi Alpha Alpha (PAA) is the Global Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration and invites eligible graduate and undergraduate students in public affairs to apply each spring semester. All memberships are national with a local chapter affiliation. PAA is run by NASPAA and recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in public administration, public policy, and public affairs. Membership is open to both graduate and undergraduate students who meet the criteria for eligibility.

    Eligible students will be contacted by the Marxe Advisement Team and invited to apply.

    Graduate students enrolled in the Master of Public Administration, Master of International Affairs, or Master of Science in Higher Education Administration program must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or higher at the time of application and must have completed half of their program credits. The GPA will not be rounded up to 3.70–it must be at least a 3.70 to be eligible.

    Undergraduate students must be official Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs (BSPA) majors, upper-level juniors, or seniors, have a GPA of at least 3.5 in at least 5 upper-level PAF courses (3000+), and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the time of application.

    For graduating students, pending final semester grades will not be considered for membership. Invitations are sent out every April and October to those who qualify. There is an induction ceremony each spring semester.

    Nu Lambda Mu International Honor Society was established by the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council to recognize students dedicated to the study of nonprofit management, philanthropy, and social entrepreneurship/enterprise. Its mission is to advance the study of nonprofit organizations and their function in society, and to promote scholarly achievement among those who engage in these academic pursuits.

    Professional Associations

    All students are offered the opportunity to apply to nationally recognized professional organizations or to earn professional certifications. Each year, students are also encouraged to apply for funding to attend professional public policy and educational research conferences. Attending these conferences allows for networking with peers and faculty from other universities globally, and first-hand immersion in key public policy issues and research themes.


    The AAPOR is the leading professional organization of public opinion and survey research professionals in the U.S., with members from academia, media, government, the nonprofit sector, and private industry.

    AAPOR offers students discounted memberships. Membership includes a one-year subscription to Public Opinion Quarterly, all AAPOR mailings, and full access to AAPORnet, a member-only listserv. Renewals for students are $25/calendar year. Students also save on AAPOR’s annual conference registration fees.

    AAPOR Student Travel Award

    AAPOR offers student travel awards to those in need of financial support so that they may attend the annual conference and experience this important educational and collegial event.

    Topics must be related to the study of multi-national/multi-cultural/multi-lingual survey research (e.g., 3M survey research), or to the theory and methods of 3M survey research, including statistics and statistical techniques used in such research.

    The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is a national research society that strives to advance knowledge about education, encourage scholarly inquiry related to education, and promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good.

    AERA offers two types of student memberships:
    Members (Voting) Graduate Student Members: Any graduate student may be granted graduate student member status with the endorsement of a voting member who is a faculty member at the student’s university. Graduate students who are employed full-time are not eligible.

    Affiliates (Non-Voting) Student Affiliates: Any student may be granted student affiliate status with the endorsement of a voting member who is a faculty member at the student’s university. Students who are employed full-time are not eligible.

    The Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) is dedicated to improving public policy and management by fostering excellence in research, analysis, and education.

    APPAM’s student membership option is available to students enrolled in a policy related program at an institution of higher education. Membership ensures exposure to the cutting edge of policy analysis and management issues that affect all policy professionals. The Marxe School offers 20 free memberships to APPAM per year to both undergraduate and graduate students. Memberships are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students can only receive a free membership once and are not eligible for free renewal.

    The American Political Science Association (APSA) is the leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 13,000 members in more than 80 countries. With a range of programs and services for individuals, departments, and institutions, APSA brings together political scientists from all fields of inquiry, regions, and occupational endeavors within and outside academe to deepen our understanding of politics, democracy, and citizenship throughout the world.

    The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) is the largest and most prominent professional association for public administration. It is dedicated to advancing the art, science, teaching and practice of public and non-profit administration. ASPA’s four core values are Accountability and Performance, Professionalism, Ethics and Social Equity.

    Each year, ASPA’s Section for Women in Public Administration (SWPA) awards up to three $500.00 scholarships to students at the PhD or master’s level or a practitioner to help defray the costs associated with attending the ASPA Annual Conference.     The Marxe School is a member of NASPAA (Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration). NASPAA is the global standard in public service education. It is the membership organization of graduate education programs in public policy, public affairs, public administration, and public and nonprofit management. It is the recognized global accreditor of master’s degree programs in these fields. NASPAA’s twofold mission is to ensure excellence in education and training for public service and to promote the ideal of public service.
