About Us
Our History
Baruch College has a distinguished history in the development of the nonprofit management field. In the 1970s, Frederick Lane introduced one of the first academic courses on nonprofit management in the United States. Throughout the decades that followed, The Baruch College campus became an important site for nonprofit management research, education, and public engagement. Baruch faculty formed the “Nonprofit Group,” which for many years organized public events and many other activities to serve the nonprofit sector.
James “Jack” Krauskopf formally established the Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management (CNSM) in 2007 in what was then Baruch’s School of Public Affairs. The Center developed a reputation for its professional development events supporting New York City area nonprofit professionals and for its various research seminars, industry surveys, case studies, and reports.

In 2016, Baruch’s School of Public Affairs became the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. The Marxe gift enabled the school to develop its Masters of International Affairs (MIA) degree program, which includes an international NGO concentration. The Masters of Public Administration (MPA) degree program continues to offer its nationally recognized nonprofit management specialization.
Cristina Balboa assumed the role of CNSM director in 2019 following Jack’s retirement, continuing the Center’s work and adapting the Center in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cristina stepped down from her role as director in 2021. George Mitchell is the current director.
Many faculty across the Baruch College campus support the mission of CNSM. Michael Seltzer has directed the New York Community Trust Leadership Fellows Program (a professional development fellowship program for nonprofit practitioners) since 2015. Since 2014, Michael Feller has directed the Hagedorn Internship Program (which supports Baruch undergraduate students in nonprofit internships). CNSM Faculty Affiliates
Our CNSM affiliated faculty is one of the largest groups of scholars focusing on the nonprofit sector. CNSM faculty affiliates regularly present research on nonprofit topics at academic conferences sponsored by APPAM, ARNOVA, ISTR, NASPAA, and many other scholarly organizations. Many faculty serve on the boards of nonprofit organizations and professional associations.
