May 2024 Student Spotlight
This month we spotlight EMPA student and Director of School Based Early Support Programs at NYC Administration for Children’s Services, Michelle Ragoo. She tells us about her role, her EMPA experience, and more.
Can you tell us about your Marxe Executive MPA experience thus far? Any favorite lessons you’ve learned or professors you’ve learned from?
The EMPA program has been absolutely remarkable thus far, filled with countless memorable experiences. From networking with inspiring government officials, including Cody Keenan, Barack Obama’s speech writer, to traveling abroad to Germany and Brazil. The experience has been nothing short of amazing! Without a doubt, the course that has left an indelible mark on my academic journey is “Race, Inequality, and Public Policy,” led by the esteemed Professor Michael Massiah. This course not only shaped my understanding but also resonated deeply with my aspirations as a public administrator. Each class felt like an exploration into the very fabric of societal dynamics, confronting issues of race, inequality, and the intricate web of public policy. The literature we encountered wasn’t just educational; it was a revelation, offering profound insights into the complexities of our world and the urgent need for change. Every word spoken and every page turned in this course seemed to fuel my determination to make a difference in the realm of public administration, particularly within the education system. The impact of the EMPA program continues to reverberate within me, serving as a constant reminder of the responsibility I bear in driving meaningful change.
You recently became Director of School Based Early Support Programs – congratulations! Can you talk a bit about that role, its challenges, and some initiatives you’re working on?
Thanks to the EMPA, I was fortunate in landing the position of Director of School-Based Early Support programs within the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, where I am responsible for overseeing 16 contracts that have been diligently awarded to 11 community-based organizations. This groundbreaking initiative is not just a mere administrative task; it’s a bold step towards revolutionizing our approach to family support and community engagement. Through these carefully curated contracts, we aim to forge stronger partnerships with the NYC Department of Education, thereby presenting families with a diverse array of flexible service options and unwavering support. Our collective vision is rooted in our commitment to empower families, providing them with the tools and resources necessary to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace. At the heart of this initiative lies a noble purpose: to stem the tide of children entering foster care by fostering a culture of familial empowerment and proactive intervention. Rather than merely responding to crises, we strive to proactively support families, ensuring that they feel heard, valued, and equipped to overcome obstacles together. This transformative approach not only promotes family stability but also fosters a sense of trust and collaboration within our communities. As I embark on this exhilarating journey, I am filled with a sense of profound gratitude and determination. Together, with our dedicated team and invaluable community partners, I am confident that we will not only meet but exceed our goals, ushering in a new era of compassionate, community-driven support for families across New York City.
You were with Commonpoint Queens for over a decade, most recently as a Program Director. What was that experience like?
Commonpoint Queens has been instrumental in my personal and professional journey, igniting my passion for working with children and serving the community. Within this dynamic organization, I not only found avenues to explore my interests but also received invaluable support for my education through scholarships. Every facet of Commonpoint Queens, from their youth department to their community engagement initiatives, has profoundly shaped my growth. Directing a city funded COMPASS program has provided me with opportunities to develop skills, pursue my passions, and make a meaningful impact. Beyond the practical experiences, the intangible moments—the laughter of children, the gratitude of families—have left an enduring mark on me. I’m deeply grateful for the transformative role Commonpoint Queens has played in my life, and I carry its lessons and values with me as I strive to continue making a positive difference in our city.
