Marxe Assistantship Title: Research on Municipal ID Cards and Immigrant Integration

    Posted 1/22/2026

    POSITION CLOSED

    Supervisor: Els de Graauw, Professor

    Position Description:

Municipal ID card programs have become a key local policy tool for immigrant inclusion in the United States. Since 2007, nearly 100 U.S. cities have adopted municipal IDs that allow residents—especially undocumented immigrants and others without government-issued identification—to access essential services such as libraries, schools, policing, banking, and cultural institutions. These programs vary widely in how they are designed and governed: some are run directly by city governments, others through partnerships with nonprofits or philanthropic organizations, and others primarily by community groups with limited government involvement. This project is the first national, comparative study of all U.S. municipal ID programs. It examines how different governance and funding models shape access, equity, data privacy, and long-term sustainability.

    Research Assistant Responsibilities

Code and analyze municipal legislation, administrative documents, and policy reports related to municipal ID programs
Help build, clean, and maintain a national database of all U.S. municipal ID initiatives
Collect and compile demographic, political, and institutional data for participating cities
Prepare concise program summaries and policy briefs for public and policy audiences
Conduct background research on local governance, and program design
Support data verification, documentation, and quality control across all project materials
Assist in developing and updating a public-facing interactive map of municipal ID programs
    Who Should Apply

Marxe undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Spring 2026 with interests in immigration, public policy, urban studies, or political science. Strong attention to detail and reliability are required, and clear communication is essential.
