Online Synchronous
Synchronous class meetings will take place virtually
Synchronous class meetings resemble traditional on campus classes in that students must be (virtually) present at the same time
Students must commit to scheduled class times and sign onto their virtual learning platform on schedule
During these classes, students will engage with the instruction during online lessons and presentations and even have virtual class discussions
Some instructors may choose to substitute asynchronous work for a portion of the scheduled class meetings; the individual course instructor can provide this information
Assignment deadlines and exam days/times are maintained and included on the class syllabus
All Synchronous class meeting days/times are listed in the schedule of classes
Synchronous online courses appear like this in the course schedule:
Online Asynchronous
Asynchronous class meetings do not require you to log in to your virtual classroom at a specified time
Students do not have to follow a strict schedule to engage in live classes or discussions, and the only requirement regarding when they turn in their work is the assignment deadline, not an arbitrary timeline
Assignment deadlines and exam days/times are maintained and included on the class syllabus
Instructors may create non-mandatory opportunities for live interactions with and among students
These courses will no longer have a day and time appearing in the CUNYfirst listing, where day and time will appear as TBA
Asynchronous online course listings appear like this in the course schedule
Asynchronous online course listings appear like this in the course schedule:
Hybrid
A hybrid class includes a combination of online instruction (synchronous or asynchronous) with some in-person class meetings taught face to face in a classroom on campus.
Hybrid courses appear like this in the course schedule:
In-Person
An in-person class has all of its scheduled meetings on campus.
In-person courses appear like this in the course schedule:
HyFlex
A HyFlex course provides students with multiple learning paths and is distinguished from other mixed modality courses by relying on individual student choice from session to session, rather than having the instructor determine the modality for any given lesson. The number of formats available to students will vary from course to course. HyFlex courses are In-Person with the option of synchronous online, and/or asynchronous online contact hours. Contact includes instruction, learning activities, and interactions (both student-student and/or student-instructor). All class meeting days/times must be listed in the schedule of classes for students at the time of enrollment. Class must be tagged with all available HyFlex modalities attributes for students.
